Romane & Minh-Son
Les Architectes

The story begins in 2014 in Brussels, where we met at the La Cambre-Horta school of architecture. After five years of study, we have been able to work on projects as numerous as they were interesting in Brussels, and in all Belgium.

However, little by little, the idea of reconnecting us to a more sustainable way of life closer to our countryside emerged.

Through the rehabilitation of a castle, we wish,

at our level and in our field,

participate in building the world of tomorrow.

It is with this in mind that Minh-Son took the side of theory by returning to school for a Master of specialization degree in Heritage Restoration and Conservation. Romane, for her part, deepened the architectural practice by carrying out her architectural projects as an independent and collaborator.

These experiences were fundamental for the definition of the project in all the complexity involved in the recovery of a historic monument:

from a technical point of view, through the expertise in architectural design and site management of Romane, and from an economical and theoretical point of view, by the writing of a specialization thesis with an evocative name:

The life of castles in the 21st century

Conservation and restoration of historic residences:

towards innovative and sustainable management.

It is with this singular past that we commit ourselves as building experts and specialists in historical architecture. We measure the risks but also the immense potential represented by the innovative reinvestment of French châteaux.

Hundreds of them are waiting for a renaissance, and we can't wait to offer them our new ideas.

To refine our ideas and our expertise, and to engage in the takeover of a castle, we tour France and its regions to meet new lords and inhabitants committed to the sustainable revitalization of rural areas with the traveling project:

It is essential for the survival of vacant historical sites to establish economic activities within them. This not only redefines the purpose of the monument but also transforms it from being a burden into a tool for its own development. These activities must align with current heritage requirements and also reflect the spirit of the place, which holds a special value for us. The economic activities we pursue within these castles follow three guiding principles:

It is essential for the survival of vacant historical sites to establish economic activities within them. This not only redefines the purpose of the monument but also transforms it from being a burden into a tool for its own development. These activities must align with current heritage requirements and also reflect the spirit of the place, which holds a special value for us. The economic activities we pursue within these castles follow three guiding principles:

1

Sustainable Management

Both economically and ecologically, the management of activities within the castles must meet current environmental requirements, and even anticipate them through innovation. With a long-term entrepreneurial vision, we ensure the continuity of a place whose history and physicality are poised for extension. Innovative resource management and on-site innovation enable us to reconnect with the exemplary nature of noble architecture and to offer new values to these prestigious locations.

2

A Response to Societal Challenges

We greatly value the universality of cultural heritage. We believe that historical sites scattered throughout France hold a unifying power, whether it's of sentimental, symbolic, or even aesthetic nature. They serve as the backdrop for everyday events as well as exceptional moments. Showcasing this heritage by making it accessible to the general public during popular events, as well as offering it for private celebrations, is an integral part of preserving and passing on the spirit of the place.

3

Technical-Historical Study and Transmission

Being architects and trained as specialists in the restoration and conservation of heritage, the maintenance, preservation, and restoration of historical monuments hold no secrets for us. We firmly believe that during restoration, repair, or renovation projects, a wide audience would be delighted to explore the sometimes reinterpreted traditional techniques that enabled the construction of these centuries-old buildings. A castle is a remarkable subject of study, a place for experimentation, exhibition, and a welcoming space for both individuals and professionals.

These three main guidelines drive us to envision a comprehensive program, encompassing spaces open to the public, reception areas, workshops equipped with digital and traditional tools, exhibition halls, tourist accommodations, and year-round activities.

This is how we perceive the pragmatic and innovative approach to heritage preservation today: by encompassing all its aspects, including economic considerations, and by integrating the local attachment of nearby residents.
